Speech & Language Therapy Assessment

Assessment: What to expect

Assessment is the starting point for all therapy and can also be arranged on a one-off consultative basis. All assessments will be discussed and agreed in advance so that they contribute to an overall understanding of your child’s needs, are timely and fit for purpose.

You are welcome to call me for an initial discussion free of charge. I will talk with you to find out more about your child before deciding how I can help. If I am not able to help, I will make recommendations based on the information you have provided.

I will ask you to complete a questionnaire about your child and forward copies of his or her most recent school report together with any additional professional reports. I will then design an assessment for your child which is relevant to his or her age, your requirements and areas of concern.

Depending on your child’s needs and age, assessment may include play activities, talking with you and your child, structured observation of your child and/or the use of standardised checklists and assessments. Your child’s assessment will be individualised and allow comparison of his or her skills in relation to children of the same age.

I will provide a full written report within three weeks of your child’s last assessment session. This will include the results of the assessment, a summary of your child’s strengths and areas for development, practical strategies and recommendations which may include referral to another professional.

Your report is a work of art and I fully understand what you have been able to put forward so clearly about our son's difficulties with language.
